FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE, CITY OF CUSHING MOVES FORWARD WITH COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING March 3, 2023 (Cushing, OK) - The City of Cushing has embarked on a process to enhance planning for the future of the community. At the February 21st Commissioners Meeting, the City voted to approve a professional services agreement with Guernsey Engineers, Architects, and Consultants to update the City of Cushing’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance. Both the plan and ordinance were originally adopted more than 40-years ago, in 1981.

 “This work is way overdue for Cushing, and we’re excited to roll up our sleeves and start building a community that looks into the future,” said Commission Chairman Michael R. Griffith. “We want everyone to know this is the community’s plan and when we’re done it will be a reflection of the citizens of our great city.” 

Developed using public engagement strategies, the Comprehensive Plan is a long-range policy document that establishes a unified vision for growth, development, and decision making in Cushing until the year 2050. The plan examines the needs and desires of the community holistically and will include topics such as residential growth, economic development, land use, infrastructure, and community character. Once the Comprehensive Plan update is complete, an update of the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance will follow. 

“We’re tackling both issues in the same project. Doing this work in tandem ensures we get a quality operating plan to move this city forward,” said Griffith. 

The Comprehensive planning process is expected to take 18-months to complete beginning in mid-April.
