Tolkien (1892 1973) was a distinguished English philologist\, academic\, and author\, universally recognized as the "father of modern high fantasy". His writing is characterized by immense world-building\, intricate linguistic invention\, and a profound blend of myth\, folklore\, and personal experience. Tolkien's primary passion was language. He did not just write stories\; he invented entire languages (such as Quenya and Sindarin) for which the stories of Middle-earth were originally created. "The Hobbit" (1937) was originally written as a children's book for his own children\, it is light in tone but introduces the core of his world. "The Lord of The Rings" (1954-1955) is a massive\, 500\,000-word epic that continued The Hobbit but shifted to a much darker\, more serious tone. \nTolkien's writing style is noted for its slow\, deliberate pacing that allows for deep immersion. Despite being labeled by some early critics as escapist\, his work is widely recognized for its profound emotional impact and serious\, often sorrowful\, tone. As a veteran of the Battle of the Somme in World War I\, his writing was influenced by the themes of loss and the camaraderie of soldiers. \nHe was a close friend of C.S. Lewis and a member of the Inklings\, a literary discussion group at Oxford.\nFor more information about this event\, please contact the Cushing Public Library at 918-225-4188 or stop by at 215 N. Steele Ave. Cushing\, OK 74023.
